Silk Road International League of Theatres

In 2013, when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Central Asia and Southeast Asia, he raised the initiative of jointly building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road (hereinafter referred to as the Belt and Road), which has attracted close attention and received widespread response from all over the world. To further increase cultural and artistic exchanges and cooperation between countries along the Silk Road, with the support and under the guidance of China Ministry of Culture and Tourism (Ministry of Culture), CPAA Theatres Ltd, subsidiary of China Arts and Entertainments Group, proposed establishing the “Silk Road International League of Theaters” (SRILT) in October, 2016. All members in the league consent to the principle of “extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits.” The league proactively engages in the cultural and artistic development in the countries along the Silk Road, which brings new vitality to this ancient road. By December 2021, 138 members from 44 countries and two international organizations have joined the league, among which 81 are overseas members and 57 are members from China (including 3 members from Hong Kong and Macau), covering the continents of Europe, America, Latin America, Asia and Africa. The “SRILT” now has become a large global platform for performing arts exchanges and cooperation.

Now, the SRILT has been listed as a key project by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in its “One Belt One Road Action Plan (2016-2020)”. President Xi Jinping recommended that “African Countries highly welcome to join the Silk Road International League of Theatres” at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in August 2018, which has attracted much attention at home and abroad. To improve the quality of artistic creation and international influence, the League invited Tang Muhai, a famous conductor, to be the artistic director of the SRILT Symphony Orchestra in March 2018. In October 2019, May 2020 and November 2020, Giuseppe Acquaviva, artistic director of Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, Italy, Zhang Guoli, a famous Chinese artist, and Charles Dutoit, a renowned Swiss conductor, were appointed as artistic consultants of “Silk Road International League of Theatres” respectively. Besides, at the end of November 2020, SRILT successfully invited Tan Dun, a famous Chinese composer and conductor, as the honorary art consultant.

In the future, the “SRILT” will be developed to the biggest organization for theaters around the world under the effort of CAEG and CPAA. The league actively pushes China outstanding performances to “go out” in order to spread Chinese culture and tell China Story to the foreigners. It will also play the role as “integration,” launching many innovative cultural exchanges programs among the “SRILT” members in different level and depth. With an open and global perspective, Silk Road International League of Theaters will link international renowned theaters, performing troupe, performance agency, manufacturers for performance equipment and capital investor all together, gradually achieve market-oriented operation. In this way, a cross-industry and cross-border cultural integration has become reality, with the largest scale of cultural industry chain to promote the integration, prosperity and development of cultural and artistic institutions around the world.
